The aim is to keep you occupied during the time normally spent attending or reviewing classes during my medical absence in the week cited above. I have thus drawn up a list of general titles in Semantics and related fields of Linguistics assigning one such title to each student (obviously duplicated since there are more students than titles.)
The requirement is to look at it, read it as far as possible, consider what is interesting about it, note points that are informative, and offer a general description of the kind of text it is and anything that might recommend it to other students for attention. This is essentially a time-filling exercise and our classroom feed back will be very informal indeed - but I hope you will not consider it wasted time.
If you look at our time-table in SIGAA you will see the Deixis or "pointing" by means of language is our next topic (Chap. 7 of Saeed). It would be a good idea to read this also in preparation for the class. There is no need to ask me in future what chapter comes next or to ask for copies - they are all there. Only the dates are wrong because I have not been able to adapt SIGAA to the actual circumstances - in this case my necessary absence for a week of “repairs”.
There is also the little matter of returning to my our first Evaluation. I think that I suggested that that would be the task for this week. At the same time I have to create some credible appearance of a class given on each date - in this case a four-hour block - and here it is, folks! Try not to suffer too much with this chore - but don’t ignore it either. You may guess that it has taken me a lot of hard labour to put these pages and the texts behind them together. I am praying to my little lares (“household gods”) that all the links work. That usually does the trick!
