1822-1892; engineer, b. Belfast, br. of Lord Kelvin; entered. Glasgow Univ., at age 10, grad. 1839; waterworks engineer, Belfast, then Prof. Engineering, QUB, 1853-73, and Glasgow, 1873-89; invented or improved centrifugal and jet pumps, paddle-boats and water-wheels; learned papers on plasticity of ice, crystallisation, liquefaction, etc.; FRS 1877; hon. degrees QUB and DU [?TCD].
