1812-1879; son of Sir Maurice Charles Philip O’Connell; b. Sydney; ed. England, Edinburgh, Dublin, and Paris; army, 1828; lieutenant, 1834; raised regt. in ireland for service in Spain, 1835; captain, 1838; travelled to New South Wales, becoming member of legislative council for Port Philip, 1845-48; commissioner of crown lands, 1848; member of leg. council for Queensland, 1859; president of the council, 1861-79; knighted 1868.
