Prof. Royal College of Science, Dublin; chair at Royal College of Science, Dublin, and Lowndean Professor of Astronomy, Cambridge, 1892; Irish Astronomer Royal, 1874-92; and author of a very successful work, The Story of the Heavens (1886), which receives mention in James Joyce’s Ulysses; FRS 1873; knighted 1886.
