ENG504 Module Timetable

Although ENG504 - the compulsory Special Topic (Dissertation) Module - is devoted to independent study, registered third-year students are invited to attend an introductory session scheduled at a time and place already entered on the UU Timetable, as below.

Start-up Meeting
The introductory session will deal with general issues associated with dissertation-writing such as the selection of topic, the allocation of supervisors, research methods, designing a dissertation, writing skills ….. &c.

Those registered for ENG504C1 (i.e., the first semester module) must attend that meeting. Those registered for ENG504C2 are extremely welcome.

[*Note: The meeting time of advertised by me at the last notice is here corrected in line with the University timetable. 11.15 meetings will now cease unless by special request.]

Library Sessions
Library Sessions geared to instil the relevant research skills will be conducted on Friday 6th and Friday 13th Oct. Those registered for ENG504C1 should attend of these, or failing that, the second. Those registered for ENG504C2 may only attend the second.

The tour - which is highly regarded by all past students on this module - will be conducted by Frank Reynolds and/or Jan Peden. Its aim is to familiarise you with research resources and particularly with the electronic tools, which are a strong-point of our University Library.

Supervision
Students will be allocated to supervisors on the basis of ‘best fit’ with their chosen topic or topic-area. You are keenly advised to speak with the supervisor of your choice if you prefer not to be allocated in this way. Otherwise, the allocations will be made after the topics have been declared in Week Two of the Semester.

When they meet formally, the student and the supervisor will refine the chosen topic to suit available resources including supervision and assessment, and to maximum your opportunity of demonstrating interest and ability in the execution of the task.

A number of supervisors are listed as having offices on the Jordanstown campus and students may be allocated to these if proximity and topic permit. No one will be expected to consult a supervisor in Jordanstown if resident and studying in Coleraine.

Clinics
A number of subsequent ‘clinics’ addressing issues such as bibliography, research methods, methods of quotation, and word-processing will be offered in the weeks after as need and opportunity arises. Wednesdays at 1.15 in LT11 would suit me best. I will see you confirm with you in Friday 19th Sept. whether this ‘slot’ is suitable to all.
