Life
1585-1655; first Viscount Tara, son of 4th Visc. Gormanstown; ed. Spanish Netherlands; joined Irish Rebellion in 1642; defeated by Ormonde, New Ross, 1643; persistent quarrel with Owen Roe O’Neill injured Catholic cause; nearly annihilated by Michael Jones, Dangan Hill, 1647; defended Waterford against Ireton and created Viscount Tara, 1650; escaped to continent, 1652, and excepted from pardon by Cromwellian Act of Settlement.
