1936-2010; b. Cork; ed. St. Nessan's CBS, and UUC; grad. Celtic Studies; taught at QUB; appt. Professor of Irish in the School of Celtic Studies at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies [DIAS], 1973-78; Prof. Mod. Irish UCD, 1978-96; issued I mBeal Feirste Cois Cuain (1968), third prize in 1969 Butler Awards; edited Peadar Ó Doirnin; issud Aisling Ghéar: Na Stíobhartaigh agus an t-Aos Léinn (1997), an acclaimed treatment of Irish Jacobite poetry; his dgs. are well-known Irish language broadcasters; other appts. incl. Parnell Fellowship at Cambridge University, visiting Professorships at Notre Dame, NYU, and Boston College; survived by his wife Aingeal, dgs. Brídóg and Clíona, and son Traolach. DIW
