Life
1874-1945; b. nr. Lisdoonan, Co. Monaghan; ed. Lisdoonan School; taught
there 1888-1901; established Gaelic League in Lisdoonan, and promoted
it throughout Co. Monaghan; taught in Dundalk, 1901-07; co-founded Louth
Archaeological Society, 1903; moved to Strabane, 1907; organised Irish
schools; moved to Derry, 1912; schools inspector; divisional inspector
in Sligo, 1923; Deputy Chief Inspector, 1932; books include Greann
na Gaedhilge (1901); Seánfhocla Uladh (1907); Ceithearnach
Uí Dhomhnaill (1912); Céad de Cheoltaibh Uladh (1915);
and Amhráin na Midhe (1933); prolific author of articles
on education, language, folklore, archaeology and local history; his library
was bequeathed to the New University of Ulster at resides at the Central
Library of Ulster University, Coleraine. DUB
