1879-1941; b. Hillsborough, Co. Down; conductor of London and Hallé symphony orchestras, 1920-30; conducted first English performance of Mahler’s 4th Symphony; works incl. Comedy Overture (1907); Voilin Concerto (1909); Irish Symphony (1910); Trio (1901), chamber music; Piano Quintet (1904); With the Wild Geese (1910), tone poem; Cantata: The Mystic Trumpeter (1913); also set Irish songs.
