Winchester College and Christ Church, Oxford; joined family fertiliser firm and became major Irish industrialist and Governor of Bank of Ireland; leading shareholding in Fitzwilliam Securities, and afterwards Fitzwilton; family company devastated by reverse takeover; distinguised himself as an art collector and art patron; m. Valerie Monckton, the friend of Edward VII; served in RAF during WWII; settled in Ireland; directorships incl. directorships Bank of Ireland, Hibernian Insurance Co., Rio Tinto Zinc, Irish Times, Independent Newspapers, Irish Pensions Trust, Johnston Mooney & O'Brien [bread], Massey Waterford, Irish Metal Industrie; co-founded the Kilkenny Design Workshops; his wife Valerie fnd.
